Key Takeaways

  • Match each design to its ministry: a small name mark for Sunday, a bold back for youth and VBS, a role word for greeters.
  • Size shared kids' art to the youth tee: a 3 x 3 left chest and a 10 x 16 back.
  • The KJV prints freely in the U.S.; NIV and NLT verses on shirts usually need permission.

Table of Contents

Church shirt designs work best when each ministry gets a design built for its job. A Sunday shirt carries the church name small on the chest, and youth group and VBS shirts carry a bold theme on the back. Greeter shirts carry a role word a visitor can read from across the lobby.

Most ideas below name the print spot they use, and each section gives the print sizes that matter for it. The verse section then covers seven common translations and what each allows on a shirt, because the translation you quote decides whether you need permission.

What Makes a Good Church Shirt Design?

A good church shirt design says one thing, in letters large enough to read across a room. It sits on a shirt color that makes the ink stand out, and it splits the work between the front and the back.

The front stays short: the church name, a small logo, or one word. On most of our adult tees, a left chest design prints up to 4 x 4 inches. A center chest design prints up to 8 x 8. The back holds the theme, the event, or the verse, with a full back print up to 13 x 17 inches.

Contrast decides whether the design reads from the back row. White ink on navy or black ink on gold reads from far away, while gray ink on a heather gray shirt fades into it.

A front that carries the church name, a theme, a verse, a date, and a logo is hard to read at a glance. Pick the one message the shirt is for and give it room.

Most event shirts get worn once and then sit in a closet. Keep the date small, on the sleeve or under the theme, so the shirt reads as the church's and not one weekend's. When the plan is set, browse custom t-shirts and check each shirt's print spots and sizes on its product page.

Church Shirt Ideas for the Whole Congregation

A shirt for the whole congregation carries the church's name and look. It should look right at a service, a work day, or the grocery store. A small mark on the front and the bigger statement on the back keep it easy to wear anywhere. These six designs follow that split:

Maroon church anniversary tee back-up on a pew, ASHFORD CHAPEL 100 YEARS printed across the upper back

  • The name block. "[Church Name], [City], Est. [Year]" in two or three short lines, as a left chest print up to 4 x 4 inches.
  • The logo on the back. The church logo large across the full back, up to 13 x 17 inches, with only the name on the front.
  • The anniversary. "[Number] Years in [Town]" across the upper back, which prints up to 13 x 5 inches, for a 25th, 50th, or 100th year.
  • The mission line. The church's own motto, such as "Love. Serve. Go.", across the upper back with the name small on the chest.
  • The building. A line drawing of the steeple, the front doors, or a stained glass window as a full back print. We print full-color artwork of any kind, so a photo of the building works too.
  • The homecoming year. A homecoming or revival shirt keeps the logo on the front and puts the year on the sleeve, up to 3.5 x 3.5 inches.

For a modern church t-shirt design, keep to one ink color, simple type, and plenty of empty shirt around a small mark. A lowercase church name on the left chest and a single word across the upper back is about as clean as a shirt gets.

Youth Group Shirt Ideas

A church youth group shirt carries the group's own name, so treat that name like a brand. Use one logo the same way on every shirt, every year. Students then know the group's shirt before they read it, and last year's shirt still matches this year's.

  • The group name as a logo. The youth group's name in bold letters with a simple mark, as a center chest print up to 8 x 8 inches.
  • The year's theme. The theme word for the school year large across the back, with its verse reference small underneath.
  • The retreat shirt. The retreat or camp name and the place across the back, the dates small underneath, and the group logo on the chest.
  • The group's own saying. The line the leader closes every meeting with, printed across the upper back so it reads as the group's own. Read it once as a stranger would, since a phrase that makes sense inside the group can read differently outside it.
  • The student-drawn design. Students submit drawings for the year's theme, leaders pick one, and it prints in full color like any other artwork.
  • The youth group hoodie. The same logo on a hoodie for fall and winter retreats. The Gildan 18500 hoodie takes a center chest print up to 8 x 8 inches and a full back up to 14 x 16.

A group that runs from middle school through high school can need youth and adult sizes. Size the art to the youth tee, and it also fits most of our adult tees.

VBS and Church Camp Shirt Ideas

VBS and church camp shirts are simplest as one theme design shared by kids and leaders, with the shirt color telling them apart. Children's shirts have smaller print spots, so they set the size of the art.

Our Gildan 5000B youth tee runs youth XS to XL, which the maker's chart matches to kids' sizes 4 through 18-20. Its left chest spot prints up to 3 x 3 inches and its full back up to 10 x 16. Art sized to those boxes also fits most of our adult tees, so every helper can wear the kids' design. Every shirt in a design must offer each spot it uses, at the same size or larger, so start on the youth tee.

One design counts together across every shirt style, color, and size you add to it. The more shirts share it, the less each one costs, which is why these ideas keep to one artwork:

  • The theme on the back. The VBS theme art across the full back, sized up to 10 x 16 inches so youth tees take it.
  • Crew colors. Each age group or crew wears its own shirt color with the same artwork. Pick the colors as a set, all dark with light ink or all bright with dark ink, so one ink reads on every shirt.
  • Leader shirts. Leaders wear a color no child is wearing, so a child who wanders off can find one in a crowd.
  • The memory verse. The week's memory verse reference on the sleeve, up to 3 x 3 inches on the youth tee and 3.5 x 3.5 on adult tees.

Printing each crew's name on its own shirts changes the artwork, so each crew becomes its own design with its own volume pricing. Shirt color alone tells the crews apart, and the schedule can list which crew wears which color.

Mission Trip Shirt Ideas

Church mission trip shirts do two jobs. They make the team easy to count in an airport, and they keep the trip's name and year once the team is home. A bright shirt color the whole team shares handles the first job, and the back print handles the second.

  • Trip, place, and year. "[Church Name] Missions, [Place], [Year]" across the full back, with a small cross or the church logo on the chest.
  • The map. The host country's outline with a heart at the team's town, as a full back print up to 13 x 17 inches.
  • The sending verse. A reference such as "Matthew 28:19" set small under the trip name, which quotes no translation's text.
  • The host language. A greeting or short verse in the host country's language, checked by a native speaker. Check that translation for permission too.
  • One shirt per travel day. The same design in two colors, so the team wears one color on the way out and the other on the way home.
  • The quieter version. Where matching bright shirts would make the team stand out too much, a muted color with a small chest mark suits the trip better.

Teams that sell shirts to pay for a trip should settle the Bible translation before quoting a verse. Selling the shirts can turn a free quote into one that needs the publisher's permission.

Worship, Media, and Production Team Shirt Ideas

On a stage or in a sound booth, the best worship, media, and production team shirt is one nobody in the seats notices. Dark church shirts with quiet prints suit that job, and the team can still find each other backstage by the shirt. Here are five ideas for the stage and the booth:

  • The longer cut. Pick a tee long enough to stay in place when hands go up during worship, and compare body lengths on the maker's size chart.
  • The tonal print. Charcoal ink on a black shirt reads up close and disappears from the seats. That low contrast is the point here, and the same choice would fail on a greeter shirt.
  • The back neck mark. The team name in small letters below the collar on the back, up to 4 x 4 inches.
  • The long sleeve. A long-sleeve tee with the team name down one sleeve, up to 3.5 x 16.5 inches, for cold sanctuaries and early setup.
  • The team hoodie. A hoodie with the church logo on the chest for load-in and late rehearsals, in the team's color.

Skip busy patterns and large logos on stage shirts. Under stage lights and on camera, a plain dark shirt reads cleaner.

Greeter and Volunteer Shirt Ideas

A visitor who needs help should be able to spot the person who can give it. That is the whole job of a church greeter or volunteer shirt. It differs from a member shirt in two ways: a short role word printed large, and a color members do not wear on Sunday.

Print the role word across the upper back, up to 13 x 5 inches, and keep the church logo small on the chest. "Welcome", "Ask Me", "Host", and "Parking" read faster than a long title. A dressier lobby suits a Core 365 Origin polo with the logo embroidered on the left chest, up to 4 x 4 inches. Its polyester pique wicks sweat, which helps on a long Sunday at the door.

One word across every team, such as "Host" or "Serve", keeps every volunteer on one design, and the shirt color can mark the role.

Can You Put a Bible Verse on a Church Shirt?

Yes. When a religious shirt design quotes scripture, the translation you pick, and whether you sell the shirts, decides whether you need permission. In the U.S., the King James Version is in the public domain, so its text prints freely, as the Yale Divinity Library's KJV guide notes. Most modern translations are copyrighted, and each publisher sets its own rules for verses on products.

What Each Bible Publisher Allows on a Shirt

Here is what each publisher's permissions page said when we checked in September and October 2026:

Translation Publisher What it says about a verse on a shirt
KJV None (public domain in the U.S.) No permission needed in the U.S. (in the U.K., the Crown holds the rights)
NIV Biblica A verse on merchandise such as shirts "typically requires written permission"; fundraiser shirts count as commercial
NLT Tyndale House Names T-shirts and asks you to describe them on its permissions questionnaire before permission is granted
ESV Crossway Allows up to 500 verses without a license if they make up less than 25% of the work's text, does not name shirts, and lists artwork products as needing written permission
NASB, AMP The Lockman Foundation Allows up to 1,000 verses if they make up no more than half the work's text; on merchandise, the full copyright notice can go on a tag or the packaging
CSB Holman Bible Publishers Allows up to 1,000 verses without permission if they make up no more than half the work, and sets no separate rule for products

There are three simple routes to a verse shirt. Print the reference alone, such as "Joshua 24:15", which quotes no translation's text. Use the King James wording, or ask the publisher early. Biblica asks for at least 15 business days for its first review, and the permission letter can take 15 business days or more after that.

On a shirt, the verse is often most of the printed words, so check each publisher's share limit as well as its verse count. When a publisher's free limits cover your verse, it still wants its credit. Biblica asks for "NIV" right after the verse, and the Lockman Foundation lets its full notice go on a tag or the packaging.

A short verse is not automatically fair use. The U.S. Copyright Office says no set number of words is guaranteed safe to use without permission. It also lists whether a use is commercial among the factors that decide fair use. Publishers update their pages, so read the current one for your translation before the shirts go to print.

Fitting a Verse on the Back of a Shirt

A full verse needs room: an adult tee's back prints up to 13 inches wide, and a youth tee's up to 10. For a long verse, set the phrase that carries its meaning in large type, the rest smaller, and the reference under it. Then read the design out loud, line by line, before you approve the proof, since a phrase broken across two lines can read differently. In the Design Studio, each print spot has its own Add text button, so you can type the verse straight onto the shirt.

How Do You Order Church Shirts for a Group?

Order church shirts once the sign-ups and sizes are in, with time left for the proof, production, and shipping before the event. Sizes, timing, and cost are the three things to settle.

Collecting Sizes

Ask for each person's shirt size on the sign-up form for the trip, camp, or team, and include youth sizes when kids come. Our t-shirt sizing chart shows adult and youth sizes side by side and walks through collecting sizes for a group.

Timing Around the Date

We email you a design proof within 1 to 2 business days of your order, and revisions are unlimited. Colors on screen are close, not exact, so check the proof's colors before you approve it.

Shirts ship in 1 to 2 weeks, and that production time is separate from transit time. For a VBS week or a departure date, rush is available on request. Contact us by phone, email, or live chat before you order and we confirm what is possible for your date. If your verse needs a publisher's permission, send that request first.

What Church Shirts Cost

There is no minimum and no setup fee, so a mission team of 12 orders as easily as a congregation of 300. Orders ship free in the U.S., and the price per shirt falls as more shirts share one design. Each print spot is priced on its own, and larger shirt sizes can add a per-shirt charge. Our guide to bulk t-shirt printing shows how quantity and print spots move the price of a large order.

Frequently Asked Questions

What should a church shirt say?

A church shirt should say one thing clearly: the church name, the ministry or event, or one verse reference. Keep the front to a small name mark and put the theme, verse, or event on the back. If the shirt has to carry more than one of those, put the extra on the sleeve or the back neck.

What shirt color is best for church shirts?

The best color is one your ink stands out on. White ink on navy, black, maroon, or royal blue reads from far away, and so does dark ink on gold, white, or light blue. For crews or roles in different colors, choose all dark shirts or all light ones so one ink works on every shirt.

Should church shirts be printed or embroidered?

Print suits most church shirts, because it covers a full back up to 13 x 17 inches in full color, verses and photos included. Embroidery stitches a small logo up to 4 x 4 inches, which suits greeter polos and staff shirts. A church can print its event tees and embroider its greeter polos in the same order.

Can we sell church shirts as a fundraiser with a Bible verse on them?

Yes, but check the translation first. Biblica, the NIV's publisher, counts fundraiser and donor-gift items as commercial use and says a verse on shirts typically needs written permission. Tyndale asks for its questionnaire before an NLT verse goes on a shirt. The King James text is public domain in the U.S., and a verse reference alone quotes no translation.

Start With the Ministry, Then the Shirt

The best church shirt designs start from the shirt's job, not from the artwork. Size any design kids share to the youth tee, and give greeters a role word visitors can read. Decide the translation before you set a verse in type, and ask the publisher early when it needs permission. When the design is ready, design a custom t-shirt and place the order as soon as the sizes are in.
