Key Takeaways

  • The largest design size we print on an adult t-shirt is 13 x 17 inches, front or back.
  • On a tee, embroidery and patches stop at 4 x 4 inches.
  • Our youth tees, two women's cuts, and two Nike tees take smaller maximum sizes.
  • For one design on several shirts, size the art to fit the smallest limit among them.

Table of Contents

The largest design size we print on a t-shirt is 13 x 17 inches, on the front or the back of an adult tee. A left chest logo is up to 4 x 4 inches. Every spot on a shirt has a box like these, and your design can be any size inside it. Youth tees, a few other styles, and stitched designs all work with smaller boxes.

Our Design Studio sets these limits on every tee we carry, and each tee's product page shows its own.

What Size Should a T-Shirt Design Be?

A t-shirt design should fit the box of the spot it goes on. On our adult tees, a full front or full back print runs up to 13 x 17 inches. A center chest print runs up to 8 x 8, and a left chest logo up to 4 x 4. The table gives every spot and the most each method takes there; past 4 x 4 inches, only print fits.

Chart: in a 13 x 17 inch full front box, a square logo stops at 13 x 13 and tall art at 8.5 x 17

Sizes are width x height in inches, as of November 2026.

Each box caps the width and the height at once, so the shape of your art decides which edge it meets first. On the full front, a square logo stops at 13 x 13 inches. A wordmark four times wider than it is tall stops at 13 x 3.25. Art twice as tall as it is wide stops at 8.5 x 17.

You do not have to work that out by hand. In Griwolfe's Design Studio, each spot shows its box as "up to" a size in inches. Your art shows its own size as you resize it, and art that runs past the box gets a warning to make it smaller. Browse custom t-shirts and open any tee to see the boxes on that shirt.

Which T-Shirts Take a Smaller Design?

Our four youth tees, two women's tees, and the two Nike Dri-FIT Cotton/Poly tees take smaller boxes than a standard adult tee. Every other tee we carry matches a standard tee at each spot it offers. The one gap is the short-sleeve A4 Cooling Performance T-Shirt, which takes no patch on its left chest. Pocket tees have no full front, so their front designs stop at 4 x 4 inches, and the Nike tees skip the left sleeve.

Print sizes in inches. The chest and sleeve boxes hold for every method. The Gildan youth tees also cut the back hem to 3 x 3, and two of them cut the back neck too.

A youth front design tops out at 10 inches wide, 3 inches narrower than on an adult tee. On the three Gildan youth tees, a left or right chest logo stops at 3 x 3 inches in print, thread, or a patch.

The women's cuts keep the adult chest and back but narrow the front. The Gildan Women's Softstyle prints up to 11 x 16 there, and the Gildan Women's Ultra Cotton up to 12 x 16. Both Nike tees take a 12 x 17 front, and the long sleeve takes a 12 x 17 back as well. A 13-inch-wide front made for a standard adult tee has to shrink on all of these shirts, so pick the tee first.

How Do You Size One Design for Several Shirts?

Fit the art to the smallest box among the shirts that share it. One design can run across several of our tees, in any colors and shirt sizes. A style has to offer every spot the design uses, at the same size or larger. In practice, the art must fit each shirt's box for that spot and method.

Take a full-front print at 13 x 17 inches. It fits every standard adult tee with a full front, but not the Gildan Women's Softstyle, whose front stops at 11 x 16. Scale that art to 11 inches wide (about 11 x 14.4), and the same art goes on both shirts. Add a Gildan Youth Softstyle, whose front stops at 10 x 14, and the art drops to 10 inches wide (about 10 x 13.1).

The rule reaches past tees. The Gildan Heavy Blend Hoodie's front box is 14 x 10.5 inches, wider and shorter than a tee's. A front design meant for that hoodie and your tees stays within 13 x 10.5. Our hoodie vs sweatshirt guide lists the rest of the hoodie's boxes.

Start the design on the shirt with the smallest box, then add the others in the cart. If you size the art past a smaller shirt's box, that shirt will not show up when you add products to the design.

How Small Can Text Be on a T-Shirt?

Text in thread or on a patch has a minimum height; our Design Studio sets none for printed text. Embroidery and embroidered patches need capital letters about 0.2 inch tall in a bold sans-serif. That means plain letters with no little feet, set in Bold, or a heavy face like Anton. Other typefaces need about 0.4 inch, and outlined text half an inch.

Woven, PVC, sublimated, and leather patches allow letters as small as about 0.08 inch. For text you set in a face from the Design Studio's Typefaces list, the studio flags a line that is too small.

Those floors matter most inside a 4 x 4 chest box. A tagline set under a stitched chest logo can fall below them, so check its letter height or print that shirt instead. Our hat embroidery fonts guide shows which typefaces hold up, and the same limits apply on a shirt.

How to Check Your Design Size Before You Order

Check the size twice: in the Design Studio as you build, then on your proof. Open a tee, pick a side, choose how that side is made, then pick one or more spots on it. Each spot shows its box before you add anything. If you have your logo as a vector file (AI, SVG, or PDF), upload that one: vector files stay sharp at any print size.

We email you a design proof within 1 to 2 business days of your order, and revisions are unlimited. The proof confirms the exact size of every design before production. Our tees ship in 1 to 2 weeks.

Frequently Asked Questions

What size should a logo be on a shirt?

A left chest logo on our adult tees runs up to 4 x 4 inches, in print, embroidery, or a patch. On the Gildan youth tees it stops at 3 x 3. For a bigger logo without a full-front print, the center chest takes up to 8 x 8 inches in print. A full-front logo can reach 13 x 17.

What size is a back print on a t-shirt?

A full back print on our adult tees runs up to 13 x 17 inches, the same box as the full front. The upper back takes up to 13 x 5 in print, and the back neck up to 4 x 4. On youth tees the full back narrows to 10 x 16 on the Gildan tees and 10 x 17 on the Team 365. The Nike Dri-FIT Cotton/Poly Long Sleeve's full back takes up to 12 x 17.

How big should a sleeve design be?

A sleeve design on our tees runs up to 3.5 x 3.5 inches in print, embroidery, or a patch. The Gildan youth tees and the Gildan Women's Softstyle take up to 3 x 3. On a long sleeve tee, a print can also run down the sleeve, up to 3.5 x 16.5 inches.

Can a t-shirt design be bigger than 13 x 17 inches?

No, 13 x 17 inches is the largest box for one spot on our tees, and the Design Studio warns when art runs past it. For more print on one shirt, use the full front and the full back together; the back takes the same size.

Size the Design to the Spot, Then the Shirt

The right size for a t-shirt design comes down to two choices: the spot and the shirt. Pick the spot, read its box in the size chart, then check whether your tee is in the table of shirts with smaller boxes. If the design will run across several shirts, size it for the smallest box among them.

Browse the t-shirt collection, open the tee you want, and place your art on the spot you picked.
