- How to Choose a Structured or Unstructured Cap
A structured trucker hat has a stiff layer behind the front of the crown, so the front stands up on its own. An unstructured trucker hat has no stiffener, so the front relaxes and follows the shape of your head. Most truckers are structured: 55 of the 67 in our trucker collection, by their makers' spec sheets (October 2026).
How stiff the front is and how tall the crown is are two separate choices. The build also doesn't change how big your logo can be, only how it sits. Pick structured when every hat in a group should look the same in photos and on the job. Pick unstructured when the hat should feel worn in from the first day.
Structured vs Unstructured Trucker Hat Compared
Structured and unstructured truckers differ in what sits behind the front, how the hat sits on the head, and how the logo looks. The largest front design is the same on both. Crown heights below come from the makers' spec sheets, and design sizes from the production limits we set for each hat.

| Feature | Structured trucker | Unstructured trucker |
|---|---|---|
| Behind the front | A stiff layer, often a stiffened cotton cloth called buckram | Usually only the front fabric (the Legacy LTA adds foam backing) |
| On the head | The front rises almost straight up from the bill | The front leans back and follows the forehead |
| Crown height in our collection | Low, mid, or high | Low or mid; none is high |
| Largest front design | Up to 6 inches wide; up to 2.3 inches tall in embroidery or printing, 3 inches as a patch (some hats run smaller) | The same |
| How the logo sits | Flat and upright | Curved with the front, leaning back slightly |
| Look | Crisp, the same shape on every head | Broken in and relaxed |
| In a bag | Keeps its shape best when it isn't crushed | Folds easily, with no front shape to lose |
| Examples we carry | Richardson 112, Richardson 115, YP Classics 6606 | Richardson 111, Legacy OFA, 47 Brand 4710 |
One maker's sheets show the split clearly. The Richardson 115 lists "Structured, six-panel, low pro" with a 60/40 cotton and polyester front. The Richardson 111 lists "Unstructured, six-panel, low pro" with a 100% cotton twill front. Both are six-panel, low-profile Richardson truckers, so the build and the fabric are what change.
Shop custom trucker hats to compare both builds; product pages say whether the hat is structured or unstructured.
What Makes a Trucker Hat Structured?
A trucker hat is structured when a stiff layer behind the front of the crown keeps it standing, on a head or on a shelf. That layer is often buckram, a cotton cloth treated so it holds a shape. An unstructured trucker leaves the stiff layer out, so the front is usually only fabric. Other caps follow the same rule, and a dad hat is an unstructured cap.

The mesh back has nothing to do with it. Both builds have one. The Richardson 111 puts a soft mesh back behind an unstructured front, and the 112 a polyester mesh back behind a structured one. A foam front is a material choice, and three of the four foam truckers we carry are listed as structured (more in the FAQ below).
To read a listing, look for the maker's build line. Most makers write the build, the panel count, and the crown height together, as in "Structured, six-panel, mid pro," with the build first.
Product photos show it too. In a side view, a structured front rises almost straight up from the bill, while an unstructured front slopes back in a rounder line. The owner of a print shop that decorates both described the same thing on the Starter Prints channel. The structured hat "kind of pops up on you," the owner said, and the unstructured one will "kind of lean back on you."
Are Trucker Hats Structured? What Our Collection Shows
Most trucker hats are structured, but not all. As of October 2026, Griwolfe's trucker collection holds 67 hats. Their makers list 55 as structured, 11 as unstructured, and one as soft structured. The table splits them by crown height, which makers call the profile.
| Build | Low profile | Mid profile | High profile | Total |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Structured | 4 | 41 | 10 | 55 |
| Soft structured | 1 | 0 | 0 | 1 |
| Unstructured | 9 | 2 | 0 | 11 |
Every high-profile trucker we carry is structured.
Nine of the 11 unstructured truckers are low profile. The two at mid profile add a backing or a shaping feature that their makers name, covered in the next section. For a soft front, start with the Richardson 111, 111P, or 935, the Legacy OFA, OFAY (youth), or DTA, or the 47 Brand 4710.
Some buyers want a firm front without a tall one. One golfer on r/golf found the caps on offer "all either unstructured, incredibly boxy with a super high-profile," or pointed at the crown. The golfer's best fit was the structured, mid-profile Richardson 112.
Four structured, low-profile truckers we carry give a firm front at a lower height: the Richardson 115, Legacy LPS, New Era NE207, and Locale 5PTKR. Our low profile trucker hat guide covers crown height and fit for smaller heads.
Semi-Structured and Soft Structured Truckers: The Builds in Between
A soft structured or semi-structured trucker hat has a front with some body but less stiffness than a standard structured cap. Even one maker uses two words for it: Richardson calls its 930 Troutdale "soft structured" and its 256 rope cap "semi-structured."
| Hat | Maker's build line | What you get |
|---|---|---|
| Richardson 930 Troutdale | Soft structured, five-panel, low pro; heavyweight corduroy lined with lightweight cotton | Some body in front, with a low crown |
| Imperial X240M Gambit | Unstructured, five-panel, mid-profile "with memory structure"; 100% cotton, organic pigment twill front | A soft front at mid height, under Imperial's own in-between label |
| Legacy LTA Laguna | Unstructured, five-panel, mid-profile; cotton ripstop front with foam backing | A soft front with a foam layer behind it |
| Imperial 1287 North Country | Structured, five-panel, mid-profile; garment-washed twill front with foam backing | A washed, broken-in look on a front that stands up |
A garage worker on r/hats found the label no guarantee: "I know it's an unstructured but I find modern unstructured hats are still quite stiff." If feel matters, order one finished hat in each style you are weighing, since there is no minimum. One-unit orders are not refundable, and a one-unit patch order costs more per hat. To feel a hat before decorating it, ask us for an undecorated sample for a small fee plus shipping.
What Is a Pinch Front Trucker Hat?
A pinch front trucker hat has a crease pinched into the top center of its front, under the button. Cowboy hats use the same term for a different crown. On the Richardson 255, our product photos show a short crease down from the button and no seam in the front below it. The maker lists the 255 as structured, five-panel, and mid profile, so the pinch is a shape on a fully stiff front.

Which Holds a Logo Better: Structured or Unstructured?
A structured trucker holds a logo flat and upright, so the design reads the same on every hat. An unstructured trucker usually takes the same logo at the same size, but the design curves and leans back with the front.

On most Griwolfe truckers, a front design runs up to 6 inches wide (October 2026). It runs up to 2.3 inches tall in embroidery or printing, or 3 inches tall as a patch. A few hats on either build have a shorter front, including the unstructured Richardson 111 and 47 Brand 4710 at 2.3 inches tall. The structured Legacy LPS and Flexfit 5511UP are among those that take a patch only up to 2.6 inches tall.
Structured and unstructured truckers both take every customization method we offer. Our trucker hat embroidery guide compares flat and 3D puff embroidery on structured, foam, and soft fronts.
Patches need extra care on a soft front. A truck dealership in Missouri gives customers a Richardson 112FP with an embroidered patch, "our standard hat that we give to customers." When it added a few unstructured Legacy Chill caps, our team advised direct embroidery instead, because a soft crown can pucker under a patch. The buyer took the advice.
If you're unsure which method suits your front, ask our design team on live chat. You can also leave a request in the note field, and the design proof we email shows the result before anything is made.
Who Should Pick Structured, and Who Should Pick Unstructured?
Structured suits crews, uniforms, and giveaways; unstructured suits a worn-in brand look, all-day comfort, and travel.

| If the hats are for | Pick | Start with |
|---|---|---|
| A crew or a uniform | Structured, so every hat keeps one shape | Richardson 112, Legacy MPS |
| Customer giveaways and events | Structured, so the logo stands upright | Richardson 112FP, YP Classics 6606 |
| A shop shelf, taproom, or cafe brand | Unstructured or washed, for a worn-in look | Legacy OFA, Richardson 111, Imperial 1287 |
| All-day comfort | Unstructured | 47 Brand 4710, Legacy DTA |
| Water and travel | Unstructured performance | Richardson 935 (packable, floatable bill) |
| Wearers who hate a tall front | Structured low profile | Richardson 115, Legacy LPS |
Customer giveaways are an old job for the trucker hat. In an r/hats thread about mesh-back caps, one reader recalled local businesses giving them away. That reader still had "several from muffler shops and auto parts stores." A firm front suits that job, because the logo stays upright and easy to read.
Unstructured caps win on comfort. On r/neweracaps, a buyer described two favorites this way: "Both unstructured trucker hats, and they fit like a dream like a nice pair of jeans."
How Do Structured and Unstructured Truckers Hold Their Shape?
A structured trucker holds its shape with the stiff layer behind its front. That front is the part a crush or a hot wash can spoil. An unstructured trucker has no front shape to hold, so it packs flat in a bag. Store a structured cap on a peg or crown-up, with nothing heavy on the crown.

A front can also slant in on the head. One r/hats poster wanted a cap that "slants inwards" to be "more rounded and structured," writing that "it changes the entire shape of my face." If that look would bother the wearer, a structured front holds its shape.
A cap may also arrive with no washing advice at all, because the FTC's Care Labeling Rule leaves hats out of the clothing it covers. That gap matters most for a structured cap. One r/neweracaps reader who ran structured caps through a hot wash said, "Sometimes they just get messed up."
Frequently Asked Questions
Is an unstructured trucker hat the same as a dad hat?
No. Both have a soft front, but a dad hat has a fabric back and an adjustable strap. An unstructured trucker keeps the mesh back, usually with a snapback closure, as on the Richardson 111 and the Legacy OFA. If you want the all-fabric back, shop custom dad hats.
Are foam trucker hats structured?
Three of the four we carry are. The Valucap VC700 and the Richardson 113 Foamie both list as structured five-panel truckers with a foam front. The structured Imperial 1287 backs a washed twill front with foam. The Legacy LTA is the exception: its foam-backed ripstop front is listed as unstructured.
Can you make a structured trucker hat unstructured, or the reverse?
Not reliably. Asked how to soften stiff new caps, an r/neweracaps reader answered that structured hats "are tough to get as soft and flexible as unstructured." Going the other way, an r/hats poster asked how to make a cap with a slanting front more structured. The reply was blunt: "you can't really change the way the cap is cut."
Does a structured or unstructured trucker hat fit a bigger head?
The build doesn't set the fit; the maker and model do. Richardson's structured 112 and unstructured 111 both fit 7 to 7 3/4. Legacy's structured LPS and unstructured OFA both fit 6 5/8 to 7 3/8. For a bigger head, the 112 also comes in an XL that fits 7 1/4 to 7 7/8.
Can I put the same logo on structured and unstructured hats in one order?
Yes. Hats that share one design, customization method, design size, and placement count as one design group for bulk pricing, even across hat styles. A crew in Richardson 112s and an office in Legacy OFAs can share one group. The Design Studio shows your logo on each hat before you order.
How to Choose a Structured or Unstructured Cap
Start with how the hat will be seen, using the job table above. Then check the crown height on the listing, because a tall front and a stiff front are different problems. If neither a fully stiff nor a fully soft front fits, look at the in-between builds, such as the Richardson 930 or the Legacy LTA.
After you order, we email a design proof within 1 to 2 business days, with unlimited revisions. Standard production is 2 to 3 weeks for embroidery and printing and 4 to 6 weeks for patches, from proof approval. Rush is available on request if you contact us before you order.
