- What This Means for Your Order
A custom hat with one embroidered logo costs $19.97 at 24 hats, or $15.24 each at 144. That price is for the Richardson 112 trucker cap, our best seller, with shipping included and no setup or artwork fee added.
Other companies usually answer this question with a wide range, $10 to $50 per hat, and a list of things that affect it. A range that wide does not help you plan an order.
So the real numbers are below, along with the simple math behind them. Every custom hat price is made of three things: the hat, the customization method, and the quantity.
Once you can see those parts, you can price your own order in about a minute. You will also notice when another company's quote leaves something out.
What a Custom Hat Price Is Actually Made Of
A custom hat price has three parts: the hat itself, the customization on it, and how many you order.
The hat itself is what the industry calls a blank: the plain, undecorated cap. A Richardson 112 is a structured six-panel trucker cap with a cotton-poly front, a polyester mesh back, a pre-curved bill, and a snapback closure.
That construction is why it costs what it does. A plain unstructured cotton cap costs less, and the Richardson 112 sits in the middle as the industry standard for custom trucker caps. A Nike or Carhartt hat costs more, and buyers pick those when the brand name matters and they want a more premium product.
The customization is priced per placement, not per hat. A logo on the front is one price. Add the back, and that is a second. The method matters too: embroidery, patches, and printing each cost different amounts, and patches carry a fixed setup cost per order that embroidery does not.
The quantity moves both. Per-hat cost falls as the count rises, because setup and machine time spread across more pieces.
Hat prices also move over time, which is why any honest price needs a date on it. The cost of producing a plain cap changes year to year; the US government tracks it in the Producer Price Index. Every number in this article is current as of July 28, 2026, and we re-date them when we refresh it.
Real Custom Hat Prices: The Richardson 112
You do not need a price list with hundreds of rows. A Richardson 112 has four placements where a design can go: front, back, left, and right. Whatever you pick, you only ever add two things together:
Your price per hat = the hat + your logo on each placement you use.
That works because the same method costs the same on any placement. A logo on the front costs the same as that logo on the side. The price then comes down as your quantity grows.
Here is what a Richardson 112 actually costs with a logo on one placement. These are finished prices per hat, shipping included, with nothing else to add.
What you pay per hat, Richardson 112, logo on one placement
| Method | 1 | 6 | 12 | 24 | 48 | 144 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Embroidery (standard flat) | $44.19 | $33.90 | $24.73 | $19.97 | $16.95 | $15.24 |
| Printing (full color) | $40.58 | $33.83 | $24.22 | $19.31 | $17.35 | $15.68 |
| 3D puff embroidery | $52.19 | $40.40 | $30.73 | $24.97 | $20.95 | $17.84 |
| Sublimated patch | $78.26 | $35.35 | $26.31 | $20.78 | $17.21 | $13.60 |
| Leather patch | $67.86 | $39.73 | $31.15 | $25.75 | $22.11 | $18.77 |
| Woven or embroidered patch | $118.76 | $38.88 | $30.18 | $24.75 | $21.11 | $17.76 |
| PVC patch | $171.51 | $47.67 | $32.12 | $26.75 | $23.11 | $19.63 |
There are no steps between those columns. If you order 30 hats, your price lands between the 24 price and the 48 price. Prices keep going down past 144 too: flat embroidery reaches $13.52 per hat at 1,000.
Adding a second placement costs less than the first, because the hat itself is already paid for. Add these to the price above, once per extra placement.
| Method | 1 | 6 | 12 | 24 | 48 | 144 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Embroidery (standard flat) | $13.85 | $10.31 | $7.44 | $6.12 | $5.06 | $3.70 |
| Printing (full color) | $10.24 | $10.24 | $6.93 | $5.46 | $5.46 | $4.14 |
| 3D puff embroidery | $21.85 | $16.81 | $13.44 | $11.12 | $9.06 | $6.30 |
| Sublimated patch | $47.92 | $11.76 | $9.02 | $6.93 | $5.32 | $2.06 |
| Leather patch | $37.52 | $16.14 | $13.86 | $11.90 | $10.22 | $7.23 |
| Woven or embroidered patch | $88.42 | $15.29 | $12.89 | $10.90 | $9.22 | $6.22 |
| PVC patch | $141.17 | $24.08 | $14.83 | $12.90 | $11.22 | $8.09 |
A worked example. Say you're outfitting a crew of 24 and want your logo embroidered on the front: $19.97 per hat, $479.28 for the whole order, shipped. Decide the crew name should go on the left side too, and each hat becomes $26.09, so $626.16 for the twenty-four. No artwork fee, no setup fee, no shipping line.
A few things to know when reading these tables:
- These prices are for the Richardson 112. Other hats cost a little more or a little less.
- A colored deboss leather patch and a 3D PVC patch cost slightly more than the rows shown.
- Printing does not get cheaper at every quantity. It holds the same price across some quantities, then drops at the next level.
- On product pages today, printing is labeled DTF. That is the name of the printing technology we use.
- These prices are current as of July 28, 2026. We update the date whenever we update the numbers.
The Fees Other Custom Hat Companies Charge
Many custom hat quotes come with extra costs that never appear in the per-hat price.
The big one is digitizing. Embroidery machines can't read a PNG, so your logo has to be digitized first, meaning converted into a production-ready file the machine can follow. Most companies bill that as a separate one-time charge.
At other companies it usually runs $20 to $100, depending on how detailed the artwork is. A flat $30 charge is common. Some companies drop it once you pass 10 or 12 hats, and some charge it again if you come back with a second design.
Then there are the smaller ones that add up:
| Charge | What other companies often charge | At Griwolfe |
|---|---|---|
| Digitizing your logo | $20 to $100, one time per design | None |
| Machine setup | $5 to $10 per design | None |
| Artwork fee | Charged by many general retailers | None |
| Extra thread colors | 6 included, then roughly $0.50 to $2.00 per hat | None |
| Dense, stitch-heavy logos | Around $0.25 more per 1,000 stitches past 14,000 | None |
| Shipping | Free only after your order passes $195 or $250 | Free on every US order |
These fees pay for real work. Digitizing takes time, and so does setting up a machine. The problem is comparing quotes. When one company includes that work in its price and another bills it separately, the per-hat numbers do not mean the same thing.
We price only the product, the customization method, and the quantity. There is no artwork fee and no setup fee. US shipping is free on every order, large or small, excluding Alaska. To see it on a real cap, design custom hat embroidery and add a placement.
Is There a Minimum Order for Custom Hats?
There is no minimum. You can order one hat, with any customization method: embroidery, 3D puff, any patch type, or printing.
That is worth saying clearly, because a minimum is each company's own policy, not an industry rule. Take the same logo to a few companies and you will see it. One starts at 12 pieces, another at 50, and an overseas factory will ask for 144.
Each one presents its minimum as just how custom hats work. It is not. Every company sets its own.
The honest tradeoff is that one hat is the most expensive hat you will ever buy from us, per hat. Setup and machine time are priced into every order, so at a quantity of one they land on a single piece. That effect is sharpest on patches, where the setup cost per order is highest.
You can see it in the woven patch row. One hat costs $118.76, while forty-eight cost $21.11 each. The hat, the patch, and the artwork are exactly the same; only the quantity changed.
Embroidery changes much less: $44.19 for one hat, and $16.95 each at 48. So if you are ordering a single hat to check our quality first, pick embroidery or printing. You will learn most of what you need for far less money. Single hats are not eligible for a refund either, which is worth knowing before you order one of everything.
This is where having no minimum really helps. You can order a single hat in the exact style and method you are considering and check the quality in person. Then order the real quantity with confidence.
How Much Do Custom Hats Cost in Bulk?
Per-hat price keeps falling as your quantity grows. The count that matters is your whole design group, not each separate item in your cart.
Most companies price in steps: one rate at 50 pieces, a better rate at 144, and a better one again at 576. Order 143 hats from a company like that and you pay the 50-piece rate on all of them.
We do not use steps. Your exact quantity sets your price, so an order of 143 gets the 143 price. You never have to add hats you do not need just to reach a better rate.
The second thing that matters is the design group. A design group is everything sharing the same design, the same customization method, and the same size. You can spread that one design across different hat styles and hat colors, and every piece still counts together. If you change the design itself, including its colors, that becomes a second design group with its own pricing.
A powersports dealer we work with used this well on a reorder. They ordered 576 caps as one design group, all with the same front embroidery. Half were Kati LC5M camo mesh-back caps in Realtree Xtra, and half were Richardson 112 caps in Navy/Charcoal. The two styles look completely different on the shelf, but they share one design, so all 576 pieces counted toward the discount together. Ordered as two separate designs, each half would have been priced as an order of 288, at a higher price per hat.
What "Cheap Custom Hats" Actually Means
"Cheap" can mean two things: the lowest price per hat, or the lowest total cost for your order. Buyers usually mean the second one.
The lowest price per hat comes from quantity. Order more of one design, keep it in one design group, and pick embroidery or printing over a patch at small quantities.
The lowest total cost is where people get surprised. A quote that looks cheaper per hat can end up costing more in total. Add a digitizing fee, a setup fee, and shipping that is only free above $250, and the cheaper quote becomes the expensive one. On a 12-hat order, a $30 digitizing fee alone adds $2.50 per hat before any stitching starts.
One number in the price table surprises most buyers. At 144 hats a sublimated patch costs $13.60, which is less than flat embroidery at $15.24. Patches are the expensive choice at small quantities and the cheaper one at large ones. Their setup cost spreads across the whole order, while embroidery pays for stitching time on every single hat. If you are ordering in the hundreds, do not rule out a patch on price.
The other honest answer is that the cheapest custom hat is often the wrong hat. A thin unstructured cap with a small flat embroidery will always cost less than a structured cap with a leather patch. But a hat your crew is proud of gets worn every day, and a flimsy one loses its shape and gets thrown away. Spend a little more on quality and a customization your crew likes, and the hats keep getting worn instead of replaced.
The method you pick moves the cost too, and the right choice depends on your quantity and your logo. We walk through that decision in our embroidery vs. patch hats guide, and it is worth reading before you settle on a method.
One more thing is completely free: seeing your design before you buy. You can build the design and watch it appear on the actual hat before you spend anything. That is the best way to avoid ordering the wrong hat. The steps are in how to design your own hat online.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much do custom hats cost?
On a Richardson 112 with one embroidered logo, $44.19 for a single hat, $19.97 each at 24, and $15.24 each at 144, shipping included. Printing runs slightly under embroidery, and patch methods start higher and close the gap with volume. There is no minimum, no artwork fee, and no setup fee.
Do you charge a setup fee or an artwork fee?
No. Neither, on any order or any method. Many companies charge $20 to $100 to digitize a logo into a stitch file, plus a per-design machine setup charge. Here both are covered in the listed price, which reflects only the product, the customization method, and the quantity you order.
Why does one hat cost more per hat than fifty?
Setup and machine time are priced into every order regardless of size. At a quantity of one, those fixed costs sit on a single piece. At fifty they spread across fifty. The effect is largest on patch methods, where the setup cost per order is highest, and smallest on standard flat embroidery.
Does shipping cost extra on a small order?
No. US shipping is free on every order, no matter how small or large, excluding Alaska. Many companies only make shipping free once your order passes $195 or $250, and a small first order usually falls below that line. At Griwolfe, shipping is free from the first hat.
What This Means for Your Order
Custom hat pricing stops being confusing once you separate the three parts and ask about fees.
- Weigh the hat and the customization method separately. Each method has its own price, and hats range from budget-friendly caps to premium brands. Pick both on purpose.
- Ask what a quote leaves out. Digitizing fees, setup fees, and paid shipping are where two similar-looking quotes stop being similar.
- Keep one design in one design group. Mix hat styles and hat colors freely; changing the design itself starts a new group with its own pricing.
- Use no minimum as a test. Order one hat to check the quality, then order the real quantity.
The two questions almost every customer asks before ordering are whether we can hit their date, and whether they will see a proof first. Both have clear answers. Every order gets a design proof within 1 to 2 business days, with unlimited revisions, and nothing goes into production until you approve it. Standard production is 2 weeks for embroidery and printing, and 4 weeks for patch methods, from approval. If your deadline is tighter, rush service runs as low as 3 business days.
