What You Need Before You Design Your Own Hat

You need a logo file, or nothing at all. If you have a logo, the Design Studio takes PNG, JPG, SVG, PDF, AI, PSD, and other common files. If you don't have a logo yet, build one in the Studio from text and shapes.

Either way, there is no Photoshop and no design experience involved. A clean, high-contrast logo reproduces best, and simple line art holds up better than a busy photo on a small front panel. If you are not sure your file will work, ask the design team on live chat before you start.

Start on the Product Page and Choose Your Placements

There is no separate design app. You start on the product page for the hat you want, and it lists the placements you can decorate.

1. Go to the product page for the hat you want. Its "Design your cap" panel shows each placement, meaning each side of the hat, with how many locations it has. On the trucker cap in this walkthrough, the Front has 3 locations, and the Back, Left, and Right have 1 each.
2. Click Start designing, then pick a placement. The Design Studio opens on "Pick where your design goes," with a tile for each side. Start with any side, and add more sides later.
3. Choose how that placement is made. Each side gets one method: Embroidery, Patch, or Print (full color, any artwork). Every location on that side uses it. Pick one, and its options appear right below, such as 3D puff for embroidery, or the material and technique of a leather patch. The build in this walkthrough uses two: a debossed leather patch on the front, and embroidery on the back.

Open the Design Studio and Add Your Artwork

With a placement and method set, the Design Studio shows your hat as the canvas. Undo, redo, and zoom sit at the top. It has every feature you need to design a hat, and we keep adding to it based on what customers ask for.

4. Pick where on that side your design goes. Under "Where on the Front," pick one location or many, such as Front crown on a cap. A location that would overlap one you picked is grayed out, with the reason shown. Each location you add carries its own fee per piece.
5. Add your artwork. Click Upload art on your location, and the Upload art panel opens. Drop or paste your art, or click Choose a file. Your art lands on the location you picked, and your uploads stay listed in the panel. To build from scratch instead, click Add text or open the Shapes panel.
6. Remove your logo's background if you need to. Select your art, and click Remove BG in the menu above it. For this walkthrough we are building a leather patch hat with our own logo, so that logo is the file we clean up here.

One click takes off the white background. That is what you want before the logo goes on a colored crown or a patch.

Add Text, Curves, and Shapes

Text and shapes turn a bare logo into a finished hat design.

7. Add plain or curved text. The Text panel has three sections: Plain Text, Curved Text, and Text Styles made for your method. A Curved Text preset such as Arch places curved text in one click, and you retype the sample words. Select the text to pick a typeface and size, or click Path to change the curve's shape and where the text sits on it. This build's back placement is exactly that: arched text, embroidered. Small letters need a minimum height to stitch cleanly, and our guide to hat embroidery fonts gives that height for each kind of lettering.

8. Add and reshape any shape you need. The Shapes panel holds two families, Solid and Outlined, with squares, circles, polygons, and lines. Every preset is adjustable: change the shape, round the edges to any degree, and grab the edges to resize.

9. Set your colors. Select your art and click Colors. Under embroidery, the Thread colors panel lists each color in your art, matched to the closest of our threads. Open any color to change it. We stitch up to 9 threads, and the number doesn't change your price. Have a brand color? Add its Pantone number in the note for that side, and we match the closest thread. Colors on screen are close, not exact, so your proof is the final check.

10. Save the design. Click Save & finish. You return to the product page, where the product photos now show your design on the hat.

Name Your Design and Set Your Quantity

With the design saved, name it and set how many you want.

11. Name your design, then select your size and quantity. Naming is optional, but it helps once you have more than one. Many hats are one-size, and some come in multiple sizes, so set your size if the hat has them, then your quantity. Pricing reflects the hat, each side's method and locations, and the quantity, with no artwork fee and no setup fee.

The per-item price falls continuously as quantity rises, so a single hat, especially a patch hat, costs the most per piece. To see bulk pricing before you save, drag the price curve in the Design Studio. Once you know your quantity, ordering the full run brings the per-piece price down.

Add to Cart and Group Styles and Colors Under One Design

At checkout, one rule decides what a mixed order costs: every piece in one design counts together.

12. Add to cart and group different styles and colors under one design. The cart groups items into named designs (Design 1, renameable). A single design can span different hat styles, colors, and sizes. The volume discount counts every piece in the design together, not per style or per color.

Say you want the same logo on a black trucker, a khaki trucker, and a navy rope hat. Put all three in one design, and every piece counts toward the same volume price. One design means the same artwork on the same locations, with the same method, options, and note on each side, and the same design name.

That way a varied order does not split into smaller, pricier batches. From the cart you can add a color, add another product, or edit sizes and quantities before you check out. A style you add has to offer every placement the design uses, at the same size or larger.

If You Get Stuck: Live Chat and the Note Field

If something in the Design Studio is not obvious, open live chat. The design team helps you right there, while you are still building.

For anything specific, use the note for that side. In the Design Studio, it sits below the locations as "Note for the Front," and it holds up to 500 characters. Write what you want, such as your logo moved a quarter inch or a Pantone number for your brand red. The design team applies it to your order.

Everything you build and note lands on the proof. We email you a design proof within 1 to 2 business days of your order, and revisions are unlimited. Ask for changes by reply, and nothing goes to production until you approve. After you approve it, embroidered hats ship in 2 to 3 weeks and patch hats in 4 to 6 weeks. That production time is separate from transit time.

The Finished Hat From This Exact Flow

We ran this flow ourselves as a real order on a Richardson 112FP trucker cap, in army olive green and tan. Front placement: a debossed leather patch. Back placement: arched text, embroidered, from step 7. We used a "Your Logo Here" placeholder so you can picture your own branding in each spot. The design was saved, ordered, approved on its emailed proof, and made in Greensboro like any other order.

The hat that came back was built from the same design shown in the preview and confirmed on the emailed proof.

A Few Things to Know as You Build

Two small habits keep the process smooth.

• Keep your art inside its location. Each location shows the most it can hold, in inches, and your art shows its own size as you resize it. If the art runs past its box, the Design Studio says "Your design is too large for the Front crown. Make it smaller to fit."
• Save each design before you add to cart. Adding a side is not the same as designing it. A side with nothing on it reads "no art yet" in the Design Studio. Only a design saved with Save & finish can go in the cart. Set a quantity too, and the product page shows your total once both are set.
