- Choosing Between a Half Zip and a Quarter Zip
Merriam-Webster defines a half zip as a pullover with "a zipper from the collar to the middle of the chest." Its quarter-zip entry stops the zipper at "the upper chest."
Neither name comes with a set length. We lined up the product photos of the six zip pullovers we carry (as of October 2026) and checked where each zipper stops. Every half zip opened deeper than every quarter zip, but the closest pair is only about an inch apart.
For a team order or a client gift, fabric, collar, and logo placement matter more than that difference.
What Is the Difference Between a Half Zip and a Quarter Zip?
A quarter zip is a pullover sweater or sweatshirt with a short zipper at the neck that stops at the upper chest. A half zip is the same kind of pullover with a longer zipper that opens to about the middle of the chest. So the difference between a half zip and a quarter zip is how far the zipper runs down the front. Product listings often write them as 1/4 zip and 1/2 zip.

Merriam-Webster dates the first known use of "half-zip" to 1960 and "quarter-zip" to 1961.
Antonio Centeno of the YouTube channel Real Men Real Style traces the quarter zip to sportswear. Centeno says that origin is why it is still considered casual. A fine merino one worn over a collared shirt, Centeno adds, can also be layered with a suit.
Makers rarely publish zipper lengths, so the name is usually all a buyer gets. Of the six zip pullovers we carry, only Carhartt lists one: an 8-inch zipper on its Rain Defender Paxton Quarter Zip Hoodie.
A zipper that runs the full length of the front makes a full zip, a jacket-like garment covered in our hoodie vs sweatshirt comparison. Zipper length can also change how the front hangs. On YouTube, Dirky Chan compared the full zip and quarter zip versions of Patagonia's Better Sweater. Without the full-length zipper line, Chan found the quarter zip's fabric "falls a bit better around the stomach."
Where Does the Zipper Stop? We Checked Six Pullovers
The four quarter zips open about 5 to 6 1/2 inches below the collar seam, where the collar joins the body. Nike's two half zips open deeper, to about 7 1/2 and 9 inches.

We used the chest logo as the ruler. Every pullover here takes a chest logo up to 4 inches square beside the zipper. The logo's top sits 1 to 2 1/2 inches below the collar seam. On each product photo, we drew that box where we place the logo and checked where the zipper ends.
| Pullover | Maker's name | Opens below the collar seam | Where it stops next to a chest logo | Collar, in the maker's words |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Nike Club Fleece Sleeve Swoosh Half Zip | Half zip | About 9 in | About 3 in below the logo | Zip-through collar |
| Nike Women's Club Fleece Sleeve Swoosh Half Zip | Half zip | About 7 1/2 in | About 1 1/2 in below the logo | Zip-through collar |
| Port & Co Fan Favorite Fleece Quarter Zip | Quarter zip | About 6 1/2 in | About level with the bottom of the logo | Twill-taped neck (a tape covers the inside neck seam) |
| Team 365 Zone Performance Quarter Zip | Quarter zip | About 6 1/2 in | About level with the bottom of the logo | Not stated |
| The North Face Glacier Quarter Zip Fleece | Quarter zip | About 5 in | About level with the bottom of the logo | Stand collar |
| Carhartt Rain Defender Paxton Quarter Zip Hoodie | Quarter zip, with a hood | About 5 1/2 in (an 8-inch zipper, per Carhartt, counting the collar) | About level with the bottom of the logo | Mock neck and an attached hood |
Figures are for a size large, read off photos with the collar partly open, so treat each as within about half an inch.
When the depth matters, such as a pullover worn over a dress shirt for clients, look at the product photos before you order. You can browse the quarter-zip collection to compare them side by side; the Paxton is listed with our hoodies.
Is a Quarter Zip or a Half Zip Business Casual?
Both can be business casual in most offices, worn over a collared shirt or polo in a solid neutral color. The collar, the fabric, the color, and the logo set how dressy one looks. Other companies' guides disagree on which name is dressier: most call the quarter zip the office pick, and at least one says the half zip. The fashion channel This Is Antwon calls the quarter zip "smart enough to present sales data, but casual enough for the weekend barbecue."

Start with the neckline. All six of ours have a collar that stands up when zipped, which gives a sweater-like look. The Paxton adds a hood, and a hood makes any zip pullover read casual.
Centeno puts wool and sometimes cotton on the dressier side and performance synthetics on the sportier side. None of our six is a wool sweater; all are fleece or performance knits. Of these, the cotton-face Port & Co and the 80% cotton Nike come closest to the dressier side. Nike calls its half zip an "elevated look" for "work or play."
A smooth polyester knit like the Team 365 looks athletic, closer to a golf layer. For a dressier look, Centeno suggests solid neutrals such as navy, charcoal, gray, olive, tan, or burgundy, worn over a collared shirt.
The logo matters as much as the fabric. Style YouTuber Ryan Darks prefers zip pullovers "without too many big loud logos or graphics on them." A small chest logo keeps a quarter zip office-ready, while a big back print turns it into team gear.
Which Is Warmer, a Half Zip or a Quarter Zip?
Neither style is warmer by design; the fabric decides. The Nike half zip and the Port & Co quarter zip show it: both are cotton-poly fleece of about 8 oz. A longer zipper only lets you open more of the chest to cool off. Ounces below are fabric weight per square yard, so a higher number means a heavier cloth.

From lightest to heaviest, from each maker's spec sheet:
- Team 365 Zone Performance Quarter Zip: 3.5 oz polyester interlock (a smooth, tight knit) that wicks moisture, rated UPF 40+ for sun protection. A layer for practices, golf days, and mild weather.
- The North Face Glacier: lightweight recycled polyester microfleece, about 4.6 oz (155 grams per square meter on most colors). The North Face calls it an insulating layer for cool-to-cold conditions.
- Nike Club Fleece Half Zip: 8.3 oz fleece, 80% cotton and 20% polyester, brushed soft inside. The men's has side pockets, the women's a front pouch pocket.
- Port & Co Fan Favorite Quarter Zip: 8.5 oz cotton-poly fleece with a smooth face, 100% cotton on the outside on most colors.
- Carhartt Rain Defender Paxton: 13 oz cotton-poly fleece with a water-repellent finish, a jersey-lined hood with a drawcord, and a hand warmer pocket.
In a cold office, the 8 oz fleeces are the middle ground. Outdoors in winter, the Paxton is the only one with a water-repellent finish and a hood.
Quarter Zip, Half Zip, or Hoodie for a Company Order?
For office and client-facing staff, pick a quarter zip in a cotton-face fleece or the Nike half zip, with a small chest logo. For crews who work outside, the Carhartt Paxton adds a hood to a heavy quarter zip. Coaches and teams in warm weather do best in a light performance knit, and a big front design calls for a pullover hoodie instead.

| Who wears it | Our pick | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Office, sales, front desk | Port & Co quarter zip or Nike half zip | Cotton-heavy fleece that layers over a polo |
| Client gifts | Nike half zip or The North Face Glacier | A maker name people already know |
| Outdoor crews in cold weather | Carhartt Paxton | 13 oz, water-repellent finish, a hood |
| Coaches, golf days, warm climates | Team 365 Zone | 3.5 oz, wicks moisture, UPF 40+ |
| Women who want a women's cut | Nike Women's half zip | Our only women's-cut zip pullover, S to 2XL |
| Events and teams that want a big front design | A pullover hoodie | A full-front print up to 14 x 10.5 inches, which no zip pullover has |
For gifts to clients, keep your own logo small. Our guide to corporate gifts for clients explains why a quiet logo gets worn.
If your crew needs a hood or a big front design, shop custom hoodies to see the Paxton beside our pullover hoodies.
Does Zip Length Change Where the Logo Goes?
No. On both styles, the chest logo sits beside the zipper, up to 4 x 4 inches with embroidery, a patch, or printing. On a quarter zip the opening ends about level with the bottom of the logo, and on a Nike half zip it runs past it.

The zipper runs down the center, so none of our six zip pullovers has a full-front or center-chest spot. Two maker logos move yours to the other side: Nike's Swoosh on the left sleeve and The North Face logo on the Glacier's left chest.
Embroiderer Angela Jasmina hit the zipper problem in a YouTube video. A customer wanted Jasmina's "bling embroidery" on a quarter zip. Jasmina said the usual spot would not look right: "It's going to be on your stomach." The fix was initials on the left chest and the design on the back, and the customer agreed.
A big design goes on the back. Printing runs up to 13 x 17 inches on the men's Nike, the Port & Co, and the Team 365. The Paxton takes up to 14 x 16 and the women's Nike up to 12 x 12. The Glacier takes only a small back-neck or back-hem design.
For a front design below the chest, the women's Nike and the Paxton take a pouch-pocket print. It runs up to 8 x 5 inches on the Nike and 10 x 5 on the Paxton. The other four take a small logo at the left or right front hem, up to 3 x 3 inches.
On a thin knit like the Team 365, a large, fully filled embroidered logo can pucker the fabric. A lighter, more open design sits flatter. We flag a design that is too dense on your proof and can suggest printing instead.
Sizes and Mixing Styles in One Order
Three of our six zip pullovers run XS to 4XL: the men's Nike, the Port & Co, and the Team 365. The Glacier runs S to 3XL and the Paxton S to 4XL. The Nike women's half zip, S to 2XL, is our only women's-cut zip pullover, and women on a team can order the other styles too.

Each maker sizes by its own chart. The Team 365's spec sheet, for example, puts the chest at 18 1/2 inches laid flat on an XS and 29 on a 4XL.
Pullovers in one order that share the same design, customization method, design size, and placement count as one design group, so they share bulk pricing. The Glacier's chest logo can only go on the right chest. If the rest of the order carries a left-chest logo, the Glacier lands in its own design group. All six take a right-chest logo, so putting every logo there keeps them in one group.
To check a fit or a zipper before a big order, order one, since there is no minimum. One-unit orders are not refundable, and a one-unit patch order costs more per unit.
An undecorated sample is also available on request for a small fee plus shipping. One customer, a founder planning 50 crewnecks for a new clothing brand, ordered a sample first. The verdict was "not soft enough... no stretch to it," so the founder tried a different style.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is a half zip the same as a quarter zip?
No, though the gap can be small: a half zip opens to the middle of the chest and a quarter zip to the upper chest. Neither name has a fixed length. Nike's women's half zip opens about 7 1/2 inches below the collar seam, only about an inch deeper than our Team 365 quarter zip. When that inch matters, check the product photos.
Can you wear a quarter zip under a jacket?
Yes, the lighter ones layer well. The 3.5 oz Team 365 and the thin Glacier microfleece both fit under a shell; The North Face calls the Glacier an insulating layer. The 13 oz Carhartt Paxton has its own hood and works as the outer layer.
Do you carry a women's quarter zip?
Not as a quarter zip. Our women's-cut zip pullover is the Nike Women's Club Fleece Sleeve Swoosh Half Zip, in sizes S to 2XL, with a front pouch pocket. The other zip pullovers come in one adult size run. For a women's quarter zip we don't list, contact us and we'll source it.
How long does a quarter zip order take?
We email a design proof within 1 to 2 business days of your order. Standard production is 2 to 3 weeks for embroidery and printing and 4 to 6 weeks for patches, counted from proof approval. Rush is available on request; contact us before you order.
Choosing Between a Half Zip and a Quarter Zip
Choose a half zip or a quarter zip by what the pullover is for, then check where its zipper stops. The label alone won't tell you.
- Office and client-facing staff: the Port & Co quarter zip or the Nike half zip, with a small chest logo.
- Outdoor crews in the cold: the Carhartt Paxton, the one with a hood and a water-repellent finish.
- Coaches and warm days: the Team 365 Zone in its light performance knit.
- A women's cut: the Nike women's half zip.
- Any of them: logo on the chest, sleeve, or back, never the center chest.
